What is it all about?
The Board has agreed to invest in a new autism friendly HUB and planning consent has been granted for our new HUB in Beckenham. We have exchanged contracts on No’s 243, 245 & 247 Beckenham Road and we are now in a position to move into the detailed planning process. This means that it is full steam ahead this year to create our new base from which our services will operate.
The HUB will provide an individualised and recognised service of excellence to people with an ASC and their families. It will become the base from which our services operate, reaching out to people with autism and their support networks and drawing people to the Hub to access our specialist facilities.
People with an ASC often become isolated due to the nature of their condition, finding social interaction challenging. Feedback from our service users has long indicated the need for a ‘drop in centre’ or a place to go where they don’t need to worry that they won’t be understood. (There are currently no facilities in the local area offering this kind of provision.) The HUB will provide individuals and families affected by an ASC with a much needed community resource that offers information, support, access to a specialist library and ASC-friendly ICT. It will also provide employment opportunities to some service users within the Community Café.
In addition, having larger premises with flexible training space will allow us to run a more varied and increased number of workshops to provide information, develop skills to enable and prepare individuals for independent living and employment, as well as offering support to families, children and adults with an ASC.
