In Memoriam: Dr Lorna Wing
Dr Lorna Wing, one of the founders of The National Autistic Society and a true pioneer, sadly passed away on 6 June 2014.
Dr Lorna Wing MD, FRCPsych, was a psychiatrist and physician with over 40 years’ experience in the field of autism. Her research work with Judith Gould led to acceptance of the concept of a spectrum of autistic conditions. A parent herself, she joined other parents of autistic children to found the National Autistic Society in 1962. She is also the author of many books and academic papers, including Asperger Syndrome: a Clinical Account.
Even after she officially retired, Dr Wing continued to act as Consultant to the NAS Lorna Wing Centre for Autism.
The Burgess Autistic Trust will always have fond memories of Lorna, as a close friend of the Trust who spoke at the Burgess Annual Conference in 2011 and also as a pioneering compassionate individual whose vast knowledge of the condition helped thousands. She will be greatly missed.
