Lewisham Service
About the Lewisham Service
It is a new Service that started in summer 2012 for adults aged 18 and over with an Autistic Spectrum Condition. Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) is a relatively new term used to describe autism which is now favoured over ASD. It uses the word ‘condition’ rather than ‘disorder’. This does not change a diagnosis of ASD, Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome.
The Service is funded jointly by Lewisham Council and NHS Lewisham PCT.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Service you must;
- Live in the Lewisham borough or be registered with a Lewisham GP.
- Not be eligible for FACS (fair access to care services)
- Have a diagnosis of ASC For those seeking a diagnosis of ASC, the service can provide information to support you towards getting an assessment for a diagnosis.
What we do
We deliver autism specific support in a range of different ways including;
Peer Support Groups
We facilitate the running of many interest groups, encouraging Service Users to engage with others with similar interests and to share skills and knowledge. At the same time we are able to offer support and encouragement in a safe and understanding environment. Interest groups include fitness groups, games groups and discussion groups and girls groups. These groups encourage peers to support one another but are all facilitated by Burgess Autistic Trust Staff.
Workshops and Training
We develop training workshops to support people to lead independent and fulfilling lives. We aim to develop their life skills and equip them with strategies to manage in everyday situations.
Examples of workshops and training include;
- Social Communication Skills
- Understanding diagnosis (for families and individuals separately)
- Budgeting
- Travel Training
- Maintaining Healthy Lifestyles
Information Packs
We have information packs on a range of topics including employment, education, university and diagnosis.
One to one support
All Service Users referred to the Service will be offered a 1:1 Initial Review meeting to identify their support needs.
Follow on sessions
Offering information on a range of related subjects.
Support to complete benefit applications.
Telephone and Email Support Line
IPlanit
We can use a web based online support planning tool (IplanIt) to develop personal plans with each individual.
Visual Communication Supports
We have a Communication Support Worker who can work with individuals to devise prompts, timetables and guidelines to aid their development and implement and maintain structure and routine into their daily life.
Family Support Groups
We understand the importance of supporting our clients and their families. We organise groups and meetings to support family members, including parents, partners. Within these groups we offer information, reassurance and the opportunity for family members to share experiences and knowledge.
Regular Information emails/updates
All referrals will be invited to join our mailing list where you will receive regular updates with events and opportunities within the Service, also additional information including topics relating to ASC, opportunities available within the wider community.
